The critical measurements that determine if a chair is suitable or not
A chair can look right, be delivered on time, and still end up pushed into a corner, unused. Not because it was the wrong chair in principle, but because one or two numbers were slightly off.

Seat width, seat depth, seat height, backrest height, and armrest height. Five measurements. On paper they sound like basic specification details, the kind of thing you tick off a form. In practice, they are the difference between a chair someone sits in every day and a chair someone avoids.
For anyone without health challenges, a chair that is a little too deep or a touch too high is an inconvenience. For someone managing reduced mobility, chronic pain, poor circulation, or balance difficulties, the same small mismatch can mean discomfort, unsafe transfers, pressure damage, or a quiet decision to simply stop using the chair at all. When that happens, independence takes the hit, not just comfort.
Here is why each measurement matters, and why getting all five right together is what actually determines whether a chair earns its place in someone’s home.

Seat width
Seat width is about more than fitting. Too narrow, and the sides of the hips and thighs are compressed, which restricts circulation and creates pressure points that build up over hours of sitting. Too wide, and the body has nothing to rest against, so someone leans, slides, or shifts to one side looking for stability, especially if they have limited trunk control.
For clients using extra padding, cushions, orthotics, or clothing that adds bulk, width has to account for that too, not just the body alone. Get seat width right, and the chair supports the person evenly. Get it wrong, and every sitting session becomes a small negotiation with discomfort.
Seat depth
Seat depth is the measurement most likely to be overlooked, and the one most likely to quietly ruin a chair. Too deep, and the back of the knees press against the front edge of the seat, cutting circulation to the lower legs and pushing the person to perch forward instead of sitting back into proper support. Too shallow, and the thighs aren’t fully supported, so weight concentrates on a smaller area, increasing pressure risk.
Correct seat depth allows a small gap, typically a couple of fingers’ width, between the back of the knee and the seat edge, while still letting the person sit fully back against the backrest. Without that, no amount of cushioning fixes the underlying problem.
Seat height
Seat height determines whether someone can get in and out of a chair safely, or whether every transfer becomes a struggle. Too high, and feet dangle without floor contact, removing stability and increasing fall risk when standing up. Too low, and rising from the chair demands far more strength through the hips and knees than many clients have available, turning a simple transfer into a genuine physical challenge, or an unsafe one.
Correct seat height lets both feet rest flat on the floor with hips and knees roughly level, so the person has a stable base to push up from. For clients with deteriorating strength or balance, this single measurement can be the deciding factor in whether they can use the chair independently at all.
Backrest height
Backrest height governs how much of the spine is actually supported. Too low, and the upper back and shoulders have nothing behind them, forcing muscles to work constantly just to stay upright, which becomes exhausting over a full day. Too high, and the backrest can restrict shoulder movement or feel intrusive, particularly for clients who need to move freely to reach, turn, or reposition themselves.
For clients with limited trunk strength or postural control, the right backrest height provides continuous support from the lower back up through the shoulder blades, allowing the muscles to relax rather than constantly compensate. That difference alone often determines how long someone can comfortably stay seated.
Armrest height
Armrests are frequently treated as an afterthought, yet armrest height affects shoulder position, arm fatigue, and how safely someone can push up to stand. Too low, and the shoulders hunch downward to reach them, straining the neck and upper back over time. Too high, and the shoulders are pushed upward, which is equally uncomfortable and can restrict natural arm movement.
Correctly set armrests let the elbows rest at a natural right angle, supporting the arms without effort and giving a stable, correctly positioned point to push from when standing. For clients who rely on their arms to assist with transfers, this measurement can be just as important for safety as seat height.
Why all five have to work together
Each of these measurements matters individually, but a chair is only ever comfortable, safe, and genuinely usable when all five are correct at the same time. A perfect seat height means little if the depth is wrong and the knees are under pressure. Ideal backrest support doesn’t help if the armrests are pushing the shoulders out of position. The measurements interact with each other and with the person’s own body, posture, and health condition.
This is exactly why a proper assessment matters so much more than a standard size chart, particularly for clients with health challenges who have less physical reserve to compensate for a poor fit. A chair that doesn’t fit isn’t just uncomfortable. It’s a chair that quietly stops getting used, while the person it was meant to help goes without the support they need.
