When it comes to bariatric seating, there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” solution. A successful assessment can dramatically improve a person’s comfort, independence, pressure management, and quality of life. However, getting it wrong can lead to discomfort, pressure injuries, equipment failure, reduced mobility, and costly replacements.

While some seating solutions offer impressive features and capabilities, the foundation of every successful chair prescription lies in understanding the individual and accurately assessing their needs.
Seat height: the most important measurement?
If there is one measurement that should never be underestimated, it is seat height.
An incorrect seat height can significantly affect pressure distribution, transfers, posture, and overall comfort. A seat that is too low may increase the difficulty of standing transfers and place excessive pressure on certain areas of the body. Conversely, a seat that is too high can leave the user unsupported, resulting in poor positioning and discomfort.

Whilst weight capacity is clearly essential, it is equally important to understand how the chair’s action, lifting mechanism and motors perform within that capacity. Not all bariatric chairs are engineered to the same standard, and selecting a chair that is inadequately specified can result in premature wear, breakdowns, or complete failure.
This is why a thorough assessment should always consider:

Perhaps surprisingly, this measurement should never be taken while the client is in bed. This remains one of the most common assessment errors we encounter.
The reason is simple: body shape and weight distribution change significantly between lying and sitting positions. Accurate seat depth assessments can only be achieved when the client is seated correctly, allowing you to assess how their body naturally positions itself during everyday use.
Discussing weight: a sensitive but essential conversation
Weight can be a difficult subject to discuss, but avoiding the conversation can create far greater challenges later.
Any discussion around weight should always be handled professionally, respectfully and discreetly. Clients need to understand why the information is important and how it directly affects their comfort, safety and equipment selection.
Without accurate weight information, clinicians and assessors risk recommending equipment that may not be suitable for the user’s needs. This can ultimately lead to safety concerns, equipment failure, pressure issues and poor long-term outcomes.

Cushion selection matters more than you think
A bariatric chair is only as good as the cushion supporting the user.
The correct cushion specification is essential for pressure management, posture support, comfort and long-term skin integrity. Simply increasing the size of a cushion does not necessarily mean it will meet the user’s clinical needs.
Factors that should be considered include:
- Pressure risk
- Weight distribution
- Sitting duration
- Postural requirements
- Existing skin concerns
- Comfort preferences
Selecting the appropriate cushion should be an integral part of every bariatric seating assessment, not an afterthought.
Don’t forget arm height
Arm height is often overlooked during assessments, but it plays a major role in comfort and function.
Correctly positioned armrests help support the shoulders, improve posture and make transfers easier. If armrests are too low, users may lean or slump. If they are too high, shoulder discomfort and poor positioning can quickly develop.
For many bariatric users, properly adjusted arm height can significantly improve comfort throughout the day and reduce fatigue.
Understanding the individual behind the assessment
Whilst measurements and technical specifications are critical, understanding the person’s goals and lifestyle is equally important.
Questions that should form part of every assessment include:
- How long will the chair be used each day?
- Is independent standing important?
- Will the user be transferring independently?
- Are there pressure care concerns?
- Is future weight gain likely?
- What features are most important to the individual?
The best seating solutions are those that meet both the clinical requirements and the personal expectations of the user.

Bariatric seating assessments can be challenging, but when the fundamentals are approached correctly, they can be genuinely life-changing.
Accurate seat height, appropriate seat depth, suitable weight capacity, correctly specified motors, proper cushion selection and armrest positioning all play a crucial role in achieving the best outcome.
